Nordic Walking away the Winter Blues

Rumor has it that Old Man Winter is coming to town soon.  Well, that’s no excuse to go hide, so get outdoors and embrace it.  So if you can tolerate the colder temps you can bring your Nordic Walking poles along for walk.  Who’s walking who?  You’ll find that the poles come in handy for that occasional icy patch or other road blocks.  If ice is a concern for you please seek out a pair of Yak Traks or similar product to slip over your shoes for added traction. Of course, the number one benefit is that you are getting a great cardio workout by adding your poles.  At some point you’ll  find enough snow to snowshoe on and you may want to use your Nordic Walking poles too.  If you’ve yet to try Snowshoeing, many parks rent them  and some retailers do too.

Other Indoor Nordic Walking or regular walking opportunities exist all over.   Malls, schools, & fitness centers with tracks  usually invite walkers and even Nordic Walkers on their premises.  See here for some suggestions.  If you’re curious if your local mall allows poles, just ask management.  Most time you can find a phone number on their web pages.

We welcome Mike and Kate back from their hike around Lake Superior!

You’ve probably heard by now that Mike Link and Kate Crowley have completed their 1,555 mile journey around Lake Superior on Sept 18 in Duluth where it all began in the end of April.  We commend this monumental  goal and appreciate their efforts to create awareness  on how important this fresh water natural resource is to all of us.   They have some speaking engagements lined up, one this Friday, 9/24, in Grand Marais, and this Sunday in Ashland.  More details on their Facebook and Full Circle Superior Pages.

Full Circle Superior is almost just that. Come cheer them in at the finish line on Sept 18 in Duluth

Mike Link and Kate Crowley of Full Circle Superior have just headed out of Thunder Bay and are making great time on their walking trip around Lake Superior and are due to arrive at the  MN North Shore any day now.  They invite you to come celebrate their journey by cheering for them at the finish line or even walking with them for about 3 miles on the Canal park boardwalk.  They are due in at 2pm on Saturday, Sept 18th.  They have set up a rendezvous point at Leif Erickson park, 12th Ave E & London Road, Duluth at 1pm if you’d like to join them. This is near Fitgers. Somehow you’d have to catch a ride back to your car if you park there or walk to Leif and back.  One could certainly just wait for them somewhere along the boardwalk as well and join the group.  Canal Park Lodge has a special group rate. Call 800-777-8560 and ask to book under “Full Circle” group or go online and click on “Groups” tab and enter 859 under Group ID and 37000554 for the Password.  See more on their Facebook page.

Full Circle Superior Walkers, Kate and Mike, now in Canada. Happy 4th!!

Mike Link and Kate Crowley of Full Circle Superior passed thru customs in Canada today according to their Facebook updates.  All seems well.  They mentioned that they have openings yet on their Voyageur Canoe Trip, which is July 22-Aug 1.  See  here for more details on the trip.

Kate taking a break!

It is a bit early to say whether or not if we can join Mike and Kate in early September as they round the North Shore.  We are staying in touch with them and hope to post a date in the near future.  Possible locations, from Grand Marais or anywhere in between there and Two Harbors.  The idea is to walk with them for a few miles and share some of that Lake Superior experience.

You are welcome to follow them on Facebook.  The pictures they post are wonderful.
